The Boozefighters Motorcycle Club, Charter 6 and Quick Throttle Magazine are hosting a Summer Ride Bike Night beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Valencia Club in Penryn at 2162 Taylor Road. The event benefits the Friends of Nevada County Military Foundation and its families. Included will be a bike show, trophies, 50/50 raffle, prizes, food and live music featuring the Holcomb Brothers Band. All bikes are welcome. Friends of Hospice presents its “Pennies for Hospice” drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday. Volunteers will be collecting loose change donations in front of Raley’s, Longs Drug, Albertsons, Kmart and both SPD markets. On June 9, the volunteers will be in front of the Holiday Market in Penn Valley from 1 to 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Hospice of the Foothills.

The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley has a new member on its board of directors. Hindi Greenberg, who traded the wilds of San Francisco for the charm of Nevada County five years ago, is a former trial attorney who now runs a business called Lawyers in Transition. In addition to volunteering with the Center for the Arts, she serves as head usher for Music in the Mountains and as program chair for the Welcome Wagon Singles group. Hindi also volunteers for the Nevada County Land Trust and AnimalSave.

The Friends of the Libraries will spotlight the theater as the topic of a huge collection of books to be unveiled at the bargain book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Nevada City’s Foley library at 211 N. Pine. Additional offerings will include a special cookbook sale, plus books on sports and games. The event, as always, offers thousands of additional subjects in hardback and paperback fiction and nonfiction. Books may be donated for the sales by dropping them into an FOL-marked container at Raley’s Supermarket in Grass Valley. They are also accepted at any of the county’s libraries.

The used book sale to benefit the Bear River High School library is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Longs Drugs parking lot at the corner of Highway 49 and Combie Road. Thousands of books from best sellers, cook books, children’s books, gardening, etc., will be available at greatly reduced prices.

The UCCE Master Gardeners is offering free public workshops on composting Saturday in the Demonstration Garden at 1036 W. Main St. in Grass Valley. The first workshop, “Basic Home Composting Methods,” is at 9 a.m. “Benefits of Mulching” is at 10 a.m., “Vermiculture-Composting with Worms” is at 11 a.m. and “Recycling” is at noon. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions. 273-4563.

Allegro Alliance is sponsoring a raffle ticket sales program, the Great Giveaway, at the three Music in the Mountains Outdoor Concerts at the Nevada County Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 24 and July 3. Proceeds benefit the MIM Music Education programs for children and youth. Two wine baskets will be prizes at the June concerts. All tickets from those nights will also be in the drawing for the grand prizes awarded July 3. Prizes are: First, $1,000; second $500; third, $250; fourth, free tickets to the Outdoor Concerts in 2007. Winners need not be present to win. Look for the sellers wearing red balloons and green aprons.

This week is your last chance to view the “House and Garden” gallery exhibition at Neighborhood Center of the Arts (at the rear of 200 Litton Drive), featuring beautiful handcrafted lamps, tables, fountains, birdbaths, masks and other functional and decorative items by artists with developmental disabilities. Work from NCA will also be featured at Flour Garden Bakery near Ralph’s during June.
