No ID yet on body found in Nevada City

A man whose body was found in Nevada City Saturday has not yet been positively identified, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s coroner.

According to 911 dispatch, after 1 p.m. Saturday a caller from the 100 block of Nevada City Highway reported he had found a body on his property.

Responding officers from Nevada City and Grass Valley police departments located the body of the deceased man, believed to be in his late 40s to 50s, down an embankment on the property in some shrubs. The body had been there for at least four or five days and decomposition had set in at that point, making visual identification of the man difficult, according to Nevada City Police Sgt. Chad Ellis.

It is currently unknown whether the man was an area resident. Authorities said they are not expecting foul play to be a factor in the man’s death.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday, but a positive identification was not made, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Sullivan. Some of the remains have been sent to the state Department of Justice lab, he said.
