No funds to keep pests out

There is no funding to prevent infectious diseases, weeds and other pests such as the light brown apple moth and the diaprepes root weevil from crossing Nevada County’s border and damaging crops and nursery stock, the county agricultural commissioner said Thursday.

“Our main concern is the artificial introduction of invasive pests,” Commissioner Jeff Pylman said.

While money for trapping pests after they enter the county is available, there is no money to prevent the threats from coming here in the first place, Pylman said. Instead, the county relies on the public to inform them if a non-native pest has arrived.

The light brown apple moth, an exotic pest from Australia and recently discovered in the Bay Area, poses a threat to fruit trees, oaks, pines and many vegetable crops, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture Web site http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/index.htm.

Several years ago, the invasive aquatic weed hydrilla was found in some Nevada County waterways, but was successfully eradicated. The gypsy moth caterpillars known to defoliate trees also have entered the county, Pylman said.

“We haven’t been funded by the state for a few years now, yet the work still needs to be done,” Pylman said.
