News Briefs: Brunswick onramp closed; Bear spotted on Rattlesnake Road

Brunswick on-ramp closed today

The westbound on-ramp to the Golden Center Freeway (Highway 20-49) from Brunswick Road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for pothole repairs. Caltrans will post detour signs for the one-day project.



Brown bear sighting near Rattlesnake Road

John Keefer was surprised to see a young brown bear ambling along Casa Loma Drive, off the southern end of Rattlesnake Road. “He was just a big ball of fur,” Keefer said of the cub he spotted Friday. “It was really cool.” Keefer has not seen the youngster since.

Children’s Festival set

for Friday at Pioneer Park

An Elizabethan fairyland will transform Pioneer Park this weekend during the 2008 Children’s Festival. The Renaissance-themed event will feature 20 different craft tables, a castle to paint, bridge-guarding troll, fencing demonstrations and a variety of entertainers. The festival will be held on Friday at Pioneer Park in two sessions: From 9 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $3 for everyone.

n Fire destroys garage

on Duggans Road

Firefighters from Calfire and Higgins Fire Protection District responded to a fire that destroyed a garage on Duggans Road late Tuesday. “It was a structure fire in a detached garage,” Battalion Chief Jim Mathias of Calfire said Wednesday. About 15 firefighters took about half an hour to put the fire out, he added. No cars were parked in the garage at the time of the incident and nobody was injured, Mathias said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
