Protest on school cuts and meetings locally today

A protest Monday at the state Capitol (above) denounced proposed cuts to education funding in the governor’s 2008-09 state budget. Today, school districts across western Nevada County will discuss layoffs and other cost-cutting measures.

Ausenco joins forces with Vector Engineering



Grass Valley’s Vector Engineering announced Monday that it has joined with Ausenco Limited, an Australian company focused on mineral processing and engineering management. Ausenco Group of Companies is internationally recognized for expertise in engineering, procurement and construction management. Vector specializes in civil engineering, geology, hydrogeology and geotechnical engineering. Adding Vector to the group diversifies Ausenco’s services to the mining industry.

NID board of directors to discuss surplus water




The Nevada Irrigation District board of directors will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at 1036 West Main Street, Grass Valley, to consider a declaration of surplus water based on water demands, carry-over storage and forecasted runoff.

Californian claims national vocabulary crown

Aliya Deri holds her trophy Monday after winning the 2008 National Vocabulary Champion-ships in Los Angeles. Deri, a high school junior from Pleasanton, won the competition over 49 national finalists. For her winning efforts, she received $40,000 toward her college tuition.
