New Year starts quietly in county

The second year of the new millennium started relatively quietly for western Nevada County, according to area law enforcement agencies.

Aside from the occasional gunshot into the air, very little mayhem was reported.

“The streets were pretty deserted,” said Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Jones. As a rarity, Jones said the department did not arrest anyone for driving while intoxicated.

Grass Valley police reported very little activity as well, according to reports filed to the department, though there were several reports of abandoned cars, according to incident reports. Grass Valley also reported no arrests for drunk driving.

“It seemed like a fairly quiet night,” Jones said.
