New roundabout set for Sutton Way

A new roundabout will be painted onto the pavement onto Sutton Way, next to the Glenbrook Shopping Center.

Outlines for a new roundabout have been painted onto the roadway just behind The Union’s office on Sutton Way this week.

Tim Kiser, director of Grass Valley’s Department of Public Works, has confirmed the city has plans for a new roundabout to be painted in.

Unlike the roundabout at Idaho Maryland Road and East Main Street — or another on Sierra College Drive — however, this one will be two-dimensional. There are currently no plans for a raised island in the middle.

“This is more of a simple version,” Kiser said. “But it’s still a roundabout.”

The new roundabout will be more cost-effective than implementing a three-dimensional traffic control measure, Kiser said, which would involve cutting through the pavement and laying new concrete. Instead of physical obstacles, the new roundabout will rely on directional cues painted on the roadway.
