New homeless shelter open

With people losing jobs and getting kicked out of their homes due to the dwindling economy, the Salvation Army of Grass Valley has established a new homeless shelter for families.

The Booth Family Center at 12390 Rough and Ready Highway ” formerly known as the Manzanita Family Center ” will be formally dedicated at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at a public open house.

According to the Major Robert Keene, The Salvation Army bought the property in December and has been building staff and renovating the center’s nine rooms.

Eight of the nine rooms are now occupied, Keene said, and he expects the ninth will be filled soon.

To get on the waiting list for the center, call Keene at 575-7639 or e-mail
