New alternative for post office jam

The latest fix proposed for Grass Valley’s post office jam would add an extra right-turn lane on East Main Street and eliminate a few parking spots, but only for a couple of hours a day, Interim City Engineer Keith Sauers said.

Previously, Sauers preferred a plan that would have saved the parking and addressed the situation by shifting the East Main Street median a few feet to the north, providing eastbound drivers extra wiggle room to avoid the post office jam.

Now, however, Sauers said he thinks eliminating East Main parking spots in the late afternoon will allow nonpostal traffic to bypass the backup more quickly.

Grass Valley city officials have been hunting for a way to resolve the East Main Street jams for years, but the situation was exacerbated by recent road work that removed the ability to turn left from East Main Street into the post office. That leaves the post office available only to drivers headed east on Main.

Sauers said he views his plan as temporary relief, not an ultimate solution.

The switch, which will add an additional lane and signs, could occur within weeks.
