Nevada Joint Union High School board accepting applications for Area 2 seat
The Nevada Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees is now accepting applications for its vacant seat representing trustee Area 2, which includes downtown Grass Valley.
Applications can be downloaded from the district web site, or by calling the district office at 530-273-3351, ext. 211. Applications must be submitted to the district office by 4 p.m. on Feb. 5.
The board will interview candidates for the open seat at its next regular board meeting, which is set for 6 p.m. on Feb. 10 at Nevada Union High School, and is expected to appoint someone to the open seat by majority vote at that meeting.
The chosen candidate will replace Georgie Coulter, who resigned from the position Jan. 6 due to what Board President Katy Schwarz previously described as “health issues.”
The 86-year-old Coulter, a former secondary school teacher who has lived in Nevada County for nearly five decades, had served on the board since 2006. She was most recently re-elected in November 2014, when she ran for the Area 2 seat unopposed.
The person appointed to replace Coulter will serve the remainder of her term, which runs through November 2018.
To be considered for the vacant seat, applicants must be at least 18 years old, may not be an employee of the school district and must live in trustee Area 2.
Candidates interested in applying can verify their residency by calling the Nevada County Elections Office at 530-265-1298; a map of trustee Area 2 can be viewed by visiting http://www.gis.nevcounty.net/MyNeighborhood, clicking on ‘map overlays’ from the menu along the top of the screen and selecting ‘Nevada Joint Union High School District.’
This is the second time this school year the board will be tasked with appointing a candidate to an open board seat. At its October meeting, the board voted 3-1 to appoint Michael Freedman, a local entrepreneur and teacher, to replace Jim Adams on the board. Adams resigned at the end of September after moving out of trustee Area 4, the area he represented.
Freedman will serve on the board through November 2016.
