The Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team had a busy weekend that started with a team-wide mock search emphasizing wilderness navigation and ended with a real search for a missing hunter.

After the mock search, SAR volunteers were called out Sunday night for a lost hunter in the Meadow Lakes area. It was snowing at this elevation and the subject was ill-equipped to be out in such conditions.

Approximately 23 team members responded and did a hasty search Sunday night without finding him. On Monday, 25 team members continued the search with assistance of nine searchers from Placer County and five from Yuba County.

By the end of the day, with light snow still falling, searchers were still unable to locate the missing man.

On Tuesday, 18 searchers from Nevada County were being assisted by nine searchers from Placer County, 11 from Marin SAR, four from Monterey SAR, two from the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit and seven from Yuba County.

The hunter’s family arrived Monday night and as SAR was deploying teams Tuesday morning, they received a report the family, while standing on a ridge, had heard someone calling for help. Teams were re-routed to the location and after a short search found the subject in good health. The CHP H20 helicopter was called and was able to fly the hiker to a location to meet his family.
