Nevada County forecast: Rain, possible overnight freeze

As October winds to a close, an early-week weather system is poised to drop temperatures and even some precipitation on the Grass Valley area.

Rain was expected to begin as the sun set on Sunday, according Forecaster Drew Peterson with the National Weather Service. That system is expected to continue to drop rain until Tuesday morning and could leave as much as one-third of an inch to a half-inch of precipitation on western Nevada County, Peterson said.

“The bulk of precipitation is expected to come during daylight hours,” Peterson said. “There is a possibility for some thunderstorms. Some people get real excited about thunderstorms around there because they don’t have too many.”

Monday’s forecast calls for a high of around 50 degrees — a sharp contrast to the last week of warm fall weather.

That evening, going into Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop to 33 degrees, Peterson said.

“Right at freezing,” he said. “Not quite at the point where you need to wrap up pipes or anything, but some crops might be vulnerable.”

After Monday, temperatures are expected to gradually increase each day and reach the 60s by Thursday.

Snow is possible beginning between 4500 and 5000 feet in elevation, Peterson said.
