Acknowledging the contributions to the North Star Chapter of DeMolay International to the community, Nevada City Mayor Duane Strawser issued a proclamation Wednesday recognizing March as DeMolay Month in Nevada City.

With more than 1,000 chapters worldwide, DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men by developing the civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills.

In the proclamation, Strawser honored the work by the North Star Chapter in being named “Chapter of Year” in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 for Northern California, as well as recently earning top honors in the annual ritual competition in Sacramento and its raising of several thousand dollars for charities in the past year.

“Whereas these young men are seeking to prepare themselves to become better citizens and leaders for tomorrow; and Whereas, DeMolay helps develop those traits of character which have strengthened good men in all ages; and Whereas, the organization has carried out the aforementioned goals for more than ninety years through programs of civic service, athletic competition, social activity, and charitable projects,” Strawser wrote, “ … Whereas, the members of North Star Chapter of Nevada City will observe the year of 2013 as the 94th anniversary of DeMolay and to exemplify to all citizens here and everywhere their many activities and to tender recognition to their millions of Senior DeMolays …

“Now, therefore, I, Duane Strawser, Mayor of the City of Nevada City, proclaim that March 2013 be observed as DeMolay month in Nevada City and commend these young men, past and present, and call upon all our citizens to join in saluting the young men of North Star Chapter DeMolay, and in expressing our grateful appreciation for the fine example set by them in contributing to the welfare of our community.”
