Nevada City time capsule excavated

The contents of a time capsule buried in a cornerstone of Firehouse No. 2 on Broad Street in Nevada City were extracted Tuesday.

The box contained 29 coins, scraps of tin and fragments of paper, but no gold, City Councilman Steve Cottrell said Tuesday.

The contents were removed after a city crew removed a row of brick above the granite cornerstone and saw the box was not sealed, Cottrell said. The time capsule had been scheduled to be removed today, and the crew was doing preparatory work.

After consulting a state archivist, the work crew extracted the box and the contents were placed in an evidence locker at the Nevada City Police Department.

The Nevada City City Council voted Sept. 23 to open the box, which was placed behind a block of granite on the southwest corner of the building in 1860.
