Nevada City school closure committee holds first meeting

Members of a committee researching school closures in Nevada City School District discussed a timeline for their report, due to the board of trustees the first week of May.

A “7-11” committee charged to gather information and suggest either closing Nevada City Elementary or Gold Run Elementary met for the first time Wednesday afternoon.

The name “7-11” refers to the size of the group, which must include between seven and 11 members. The committee doesn’t have authority to vote on a closure, but will offer a recommendation to the board.

Committee members will do their own research on the implications of closing each school and will work with an outside meeting facilitator.

Members of the committee include: Principals Kate Wiley of Gold Run and Teena Corker of NCE; certificated staffers Sherry Chargin of Gold Run and Kathryn Weston of NCE; classified staffers Darcy Van Son of Gold Run and Liz Coray of NCE; parents Tina Olsen of Gold Run and Coryn Lake of NCE.

Community representative Jim Adams of the Nevada City Rotary and district custodial supervisor John Wintersteen are also on the committee.

The date of the next meeting is still pending.
