Nevada City school board delays retiree payout decision
Three retired Nevada City teachers will have wait until early December to learn whether their school district will pay them nearly $70,000 in incentives for exiting the labor force early — an issue that had dozens of teachers at odds with administration at a contentious Nov. 12 grievance hearing.
Teachers had hoped to learn Tuesday whether those retirees qualified for the incentive payout, but school board members who convened during the school day for a special meeting requested more information from district staff before they reach a conclusion, said board member Paula Campbell.
Nearly two decades ago, the school district and faculty association negotiated a contract that provides an early retirement incentive to teachers with different tiers, depending on an employee’s age and duration in the district.
In theory, the practice allows teachers the opportunity to retire early and, in turn, allows the district to hire teachers at an overall savings.
At the grievance hearing, the district’s school board sided with its administration staff, which argued that overall savings would need to be realized in the same year as the teacher’s retirement in order to qualify for the incentive payout.
Faculty association members argued numerous instances of calculating retiree savings over multiple years constitute a standard practice.
“We need to continue to work it out,” Campbell said. “We’re just about there, so it won’t be some marathon (meeting).”
The three retired teachers seek $23,166 each in retirement incentives.
The board will convene Dec. 10 at a regularly scheduled meeting to occur after school hours to continue the compensation discussion.
Board members are scheduled to publicly report their decision at 5 p.m., according to Annette M. McTighe, the superintendent’s assistant.
“The faculty and public will be able to attend,” said board president Michael P. Hill-Weld.
The president of the teachers’ association had scolded the school board members and the district’s administration for holding Tuesday’s meeting during hours when teachers would be in classrooms and unable to attend the board meeting.
