Nevada City residents injured

Two Nevada City residents suffered major injuries Friday afternoon when their Ford Explorer went off the road and flipped onto its roof on Tyler Foote Road.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dee Lavrador said Greg Amberson, 30, and his passenger Rebecca Spencer, 20, were traveling west on Tyler Foote Road approaching Lake City Road in a 1991 Ford Explorer when Amberson lost control of the vehicle.

Due to a high rate of speed, Amberson crossed into an opposing lane while he tried to negotiate a turn. He lost control as he tried to correct his steering, Lavrador said.

“He said later his brakes failed,” Lavrador said. “That’s still under investigation.”

The SUV went into the north shoulder of the road and went airborne over an embankment, crashing into the side of a hill and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.

Amberson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was forced forward into the vehicle’s steering column and windshield and suffered injuries to his head and chest.

Spencer was wearing a seat belt, but due to the rollover, the roof caved in, causing major trauma to her head and back.

At 7 p.m. Friday, both accident victims were conscious and in improved condition, Lavrador said.

She said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

“It was speed and brake-fade,” she said.
