A woman accused of grabbing a 6-year-old’s backpack as the child walked with her family remained in the Nevada County Jail Monday under a $100,000 bond, authorities said.

Leslie Ruth Scott, 34, of Wheaton, Illinois, is charged with attempted kidnapping and battery, jail records state.

Nevada City police arrested Scott after responding around 11:30 a.m. Sunday to reports of an assault at West Broad and Finley streets, Officer Michael Scott Goin said.

According to Goin, a mother was walking along West Broad Street with her four daughters when they passed a woman later identified as Scott.

“The mother hears the female run up behind them as they pass,” Goin added.

Scott began tugging on one girl’s backpack, leading the mother to intervene, the officer said.

“A kind of tug-of-war match occurs with the daughter in the middle,” Goin said.

At some point the girl’s mother frees her from Scott, who then punched the mother in the back. Scott ran from the area, and was arrested shortly afterward, the officer said.

“No motive,” Goin said. “She was displaying odd behavior.”
