Nevada City man arrested for alleged purse snatching

A Nevada City man was arrested after allegedly being caught in the act of snatching a purse by his victim.

A woman was outside her place of employment in the Glenbrook Basin on a smoke break at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday when she saw a man come out the back door carrying her purse under his arm, said Grass Valley Police Sgt. Steve Johnson. She had left it in the break room, Johnson added.

The suspect “took off running” across Sutton Way, but the woman was able to follow him.

“She got a very detailed description of the suspect, down to the color of his underwear because he was wearing very baggy pants,” Johnson said.

Although the victim did eventually lose sight of the alleged purse thief, police officers were able to locate him a short time later near a fast-food restaurant.

The man, identified as Douglas Ralph MacDuff, 21, was questioned and allegedly admitted to theft.

Officers found several tubes of expensive artist-grade oil paint and more than $100 in cash in his pockets, but he did not have the woman’s purse, Johnson said.

The paint allegedly had been stolen from a nearby store, and the victim’s purse was located in a different store.

According to Johnson, the denominations and amount of the money found in MacDuff’s pockets matched the money reported to be missing from the purse.

MacDuff was arrested on two counts of second-degree burglary and being in possession of stolen property. He was being held in lieu of $10,750 bail.
