Neighborhood cleanup crew seeks volunteers this weekend

Residents of Western Nevada City and the adjacent Deer Creek Canyon area are organizing a neighborhood cleanup this weekend, hoping to reduce threats of wildfires in the community.

The Greater Champion Neighborhood Association seeks volunteers for work parties 9 a.m. to noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

Participants will clear dead wood, pull flammable Scotch broom and thin overgrowth.

A chipping service will visit the neighborhood in April to pick up, grind and dispose of brush piles.

Volunteers will gather at 9 a.m. each day at the intersections of American Hill Road and Drummond Street, as well as Champion Road and Newtown Road.

Volunteers are advised to wear protective clothing, durable shoes and work gloves. For more information, contact Sam at 530-470-3200 or by email at
