NC treasurer race down to 4 votes

A retired businessman may have been re-elected to serve as Nevada City treasurer Tuesday, maybe.

Unofficial late results showed Logan “Gene” Downing received four more votes than Nielsen “Niel” Locke, the co-owner of a Nevada City coffee shop.

Downing received 500 votes and Locke, 496, preliminary results show.

Locke said he was not yet conceding. Some absentee ballots have yet to be counted.

Downing, who has served as city treasurer since 1994, said he could help the city’s next city manager settle in his job. The city is expected to hire a new city manager later this year to replace City Manager Beryl Robinson, who is retiring after more than 361/2 years of service.

Downing donates his $100 monthly city treasurer stipend to the Miners Foundry Cultural Center, a nonprofit cultural center.

City voters in 1993 defeated a measure to eliminate the city treasurer position.

Also, Cathy Wilcox-Barnes won re-election as city clerk Tuesday. She ran unopposed and received 886 votes.

As the city’s city clerk, a position which pays $100 a month, Wilcox-Barnes is responsible for the safekeeping of the city’s official records and City Council minutes. Wilcox-Barnes also serves as office operations supervisor for the city for the rest of her salary.

The grand jury recently reported the file system of the city’s planning department was not up to state standards.
