NC man, 23, pleads no contest to pot heist try

A 23-year-old man accused of trying to steal marijuana on San Juan Ridge and leaving in a hail of gunfire pleaded no contest Tuesday in Nevada County Superior Court.

Michael A. Brewer of Nevada City is scheduled to be sentenced July 12 on one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with use of a firearm, a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol. The sentencing judge must accept the plea agreement, which Brewer’s lawyer, Stephen Munkelt, said calls for probation and up to a year in jail.

Munkelt declined to say if Brewer would cooperate in the cases against two other defendants, Barnabas O. Gray and Michael T. Montes. Both men have felony conferences Thursday.

The three are accused of trying to steal marijuana Oct. 3 from Lake City Road residents, who reported hearing someone trying to shoot off a greenhouse lock to get at medical marijuana. The residents also said semi-automatic gunfire was sprayed in their direction after they intervened.
