NC Council to discuss second units in joint meeting

The Nevada City Council and the city Planning Commission will be holding a joint workshop tonight to consider revisions to its second unit dwelling ordinance.

This workshop is one of two to address city housing programs to update the city’s housing element.

The workshop will examine lot sizes for second units, as well as setbacks, and the maximum size allowed by second units.

The workshop will commence at 6 p.m. at Nevada City Hall, 317 Broad Street.

A second-unit ordinance could help the city meet requirements for providing its share of low-income housing units, as required by law.

One idea would be to legalize existing second dwellings by year-end ” a plan that is expected to spark opposition and create enforcement problems.

“Any such unit that could be made legal based on a revised second unit ordinance and/or through a possible amnesty program to pay water and sewer fees and other qualifying provisions could then be recognized as legal units,” according to a staff memo.
