National Future Farmers of America conferences help students develop leadership skills
“The National Future Farmers of America Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.”
This mission statement is what FFA members throughout the nation live by, this is the reason why we strive to bring out the best in ourselves as well as others.
One way the FFA supports their mission statement is by hosting different leadership conferences each year. This year, the Nevada Union High School FFA has had the opportunity to send members to the Greenhand Leadership Conference, Chapter Officer Leadership Conference, Made for Excellence Conference and the Advanced Leadership Academy Conference. Each of these conferences focus on different aspects of every member’s leadership skills.
The Greenhand Leadership Conference is a conference open to freshman and first year agriculture education students. This conference focuses on general leadership skills, group communication skills and team exercises. Attendees of this conference learn more about agriculture education and the FFA.
The Chapter Officer Leadership Conference is strictly for the chapter officers and committee chairs of each FFA chapter. The Nevada Union FFA Chapter sent eleven members to attend this conference in Shingletown, Calif.
Over the course of the two days, members learned how to serve their members with the best of their abilities during their year of service and how to work as a team while doing so.
The Made for Excellence Conference is held in Redding and is open to sophomores. FFA members are taught about how they can personally grow in their leadership abilities and how to set goals that they can achieve throughout their FFA careers and life.
The Advanced Leadership Academy Conference is a two day conference in Redding open to juniors and seniors. During this conference, members develop multiple community improvement projects and learn how to work as team but still let their leadership skills benefit others and shine through.
“The leadership conferences have helped me develop friendships that have lasted throughout high school, but leadership skills and qualities that have impacted my everyday life,” says Mairi Jo Jones, chapter president for the Nevada Union FFA. “I have learned ways to be more successful, to help others grow, and to be a better leader in my community. Hearing keynote speakers such as Rick Rigsby at the California State FFA Convention last spring truly inspired me to make a positive impact on others’ lives, rather than a temporary impression. Seeing the influence of FFA on thousands of other kids just like and very different from me just proves that no matter who you are, you can be a leader of good.”
These leadership conferences have benefited so many members across the nation. High school students get the opportunity to develop many strong skills and are prepared to be great leaders as they continue in their lives. These members are some of the leaders in the future generations.
