Naked trimmer arrested on cultivation charges

A Grass Valley man remained in county jail after Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies conducting a compliance check on an alleged marijuana grow allegedly found him sitting at a card table, trimming marijuana cola in the nude.

Robert Alan Furnas, 53, had been caretaking the property on Hummer Lane, off Wolf Mountain Road, said Sheriff Keith Royal. But the elderly owners had told him to leave because of his conduct, Royal said.

They called law enforcement because they suspected he was still on the property and was cultivating marijuana, Royal added.

Deputies arrived at the property at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and allegedly followed a trail through manzanita bushes to Furnas’ campsite.

“They found a tent and a large amount of garbage, as well as 12 healthy marijuana plants,” Royal said.

They also found Furnas.

“He had been diverting water from the house late at night” to water his plants, Royal said.

Furnas allegedly admitted the plants were his but did not have a medical recommendation.

“They asked him if he was planning to sell it, and he said he hadn’t thought about it yet,” Royal said.

Furnas was arrested on suspicion of cultivating marijuana and theft of utility services. He was being held in lieu of $10,750 bail.
