TRUCKEE – Several apartments in the Tahoe Donner subdivision were evacuated Tuesday when authorities found a man dead and wearing a gas mask. However, the death was ruled a suicide after an autopsy Wednesday.

Truckee police said the man likely died on Monday night but was not found until Tuesday morning, when his girlfriend discovered him with a gas mask over his face. Police said that the gas mask was used as part of the suicide.

The apartments were evacuated on Tuesday because the police suspected that toxic chemicals could have caused the death. The Sacramento Department of Justice arrived and found no dangerous chemicals in the apartment. The residences were reopened Tuesday evening.

The death was at first investigated as drug-lab-related, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Bill Jones said.

After further investigation and an autopsy, it appeared it was a suicide, he said. The man had apparently raised the temperature in the room and used the gas mask to asphyxiate himself, Jones said.
