What are the top 10 things about having five kids? We posed that question to Nevada County residents Don and Kim Farwell, who were shopping Sunday afternoon with their four sons and daughter: Lucas, 8; Brynn, 7; Donovan, 5; Forrest, 4; and Toby, 2.

1. “Definitely lots of laughter,” Kim said.

2. “It’s five times the blessing,” Don said.

3. “You get to pass their clothing down,” Don said.

4. “I don’t have to take special orders,” Don said. At McDonald’s, he simply orders what he wants the kids to have and they eat it.

5. “They each always have a playmate,” Kim said.

6. “They learn how to share,” Kim said.

7. “They learn how to play with kids of other ages. The oldest loves to play with the youngest,” Kim said.

8. “It forces the parents and the kids to be easygoing about everything,” Don said.

9. “They have to learn patience because Mom and Dad can’t do it all at the same time,” Kim said.

10. “When you have this many kids, it forces you to be selfless. It forces you to be a giver, a lover, a server,” Don said. Yet, “We think we have way more fun than just about any other family we know.”
