Murder witness surrenders to cops

A man sought in connection with a Sacramento County homicide surrendered recently to Nevada City police, who said the man is believed to have witnessed the killing.

The man taken into custody Friday, John Mitchell, is not a resident of Nevada County and Police Chief Lou Trovato said he was unsure why he was in the area.

Mitchell was talking to a friend when he learned that he needed to contact authorities, Trovato said. Mitchell called Nevada City Police Officer David Burke, who informed Mitchell that he was wanted in connection with a murder.

Mitchell surrendered to police in Nevada City and was taken to Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, where Sacramento police picked him up to be interviewed about the homicide.

Sacramento police had issued a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of murder, but he was not considered a suspect by the time he surrendered to authorities, Trovato said.

Trovato said he did not know with which murder case Mitchell was involved.
