Multiple vegetation fires contained off Highway 49

Multiple vegetation fires flared along Highway 49 near Streeter Road Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The fires were reported around noon at four or five different locations, all of which amounted to less than an acre, said Cal Fire Capt. Rob Bartsch from the scene.

A car backfired and the sparks ignited the small spot fires that lined the road, Bartsch said.

Firefighters from Higgins Fire Protection District and Cal
Fire jointly responded to quell the small blazes, which were contained approximately 15 minutes after the agencies received
the first call.

The swift spread of the fires demonstrate that fire season persists, Bartsch said.

“This is the point in the year when it has been longest since the last rain,” he said.

“I know people think because it is cooling off that fire season is over, but we are not out of the woods yet. It is still really dry out there.”

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged in the fires, which were highly visible to motorists passing by on the highway.
