Mostly uneventful for county roads on holiday

During one of the heaviest traffic periods, Nevada County witnessed a relatively quiet holiday on the roads, said highway patrol officials.

There were no DUI citations issued in Nevada County during the Thanksgiving Holiday, said Mike Lawrence of the California Highway Patrol.

“Everything’s been going smoothly,” Lawrence said.

There were two non-injury accidents during the holiday period, one of which occurred Friday afternoon near the intersection of Shoshoni Trail Court and Highway 49.

Holiday travel is expected to be up as gas prices have continued to trend downward according to AAA Northern California Spokesperson Cynthia Harris.

Every metro area throughout Northern California saw a decrease of at least 69 cents over the past month, according to the latest report from AAA.

California’s average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.85, down 82 cents since last month’s report Oct. 9, Harris said.

“Lower crude oil prices, the seasonal switch from summer to winter blend and reduced demand have added to the recent downward pressure on retail gasoline prices,” Harris said. “With continued signs of global economic weakness and a somewhat stronger U.S. dollar, crude oil prices have continued to move lower.”

California maintains the highest state average price for unleaded gasoline with Hawaii coming in second, Harris said.

The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded also fell in the last month, decreasing 38 cents to $3.44.

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy still affects the price of gas nationally, but as the pump operation scenario stabilizes in New York and New Jersey, prices are expected to dip everywhere, Harris stated.

The least expensive average price in Northern California can be found in Modesto, where regular is $3.65 per gallon in that metro area, Harris said. Of all the metro areas in Northern California where gas prices are tracked by AAA, Yreka has the highest average price at $3.99.

The least expensive gasoline in the country is found in Missouri at $3.10 per gallon of unleaded regular. The highest price of gasoline in the nation’s metro areas is in Wailuku, Hawaii, at $4.29 per gallon.
