More rain, gusty wind in store this weekend

Two different storm systems moving through Nevada County are expected to bring steady rain to the foothills today through Saturday night and up to two feet of new snow in the high Sierra.

Strong gusty winds are expected to continue today in Nevada County, and a winter storm warning is in effect in the high Sierra until 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

The forecast for the Donner Pass area on Interstate 80 is for blowing snow conditions, with winds expected to diminish tonight as the second front rolls in. The weather service is warning motorists to only travel for emergencies in the high Sierra before 5 p.m.

Those who must should bring water, warm clothing, and a flashlight. Before leaving, call the California road conditions line at 1-800-427-7623 for timely information.

Snow levels are expected at 4,000 to 5,000 feet today, dropping to 3,000 to 7,000 feet with the second wave tonight and Saturday.

There will be a continued chance for foothill showers and upper Sierra snow Sunday night through Tuesday night. The sun is predicted to break through winter clouds Wednesday.

Highs will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s today through Wednesday, with night lows in the mid- to upper 40s.
