Miner Moe’s opens doors to ‘Dean Meetup’ supporters

A local group of Howard Dean supporters has found a new venue for its monthly meetings after saying management at Round Table Pizza tried to stifle its success by forcing the group out.

After nine months and a membership blossoming from four to 70, the “Dean Meetup” group will meet at Miner Moe’s Pizza, 716 Freeman Lane, for its Feb. 7 meeting. The Democratic presidential candidate is making headway in a Republican county, local organizer Bruce Longmore said, which he believed had angered nonsupporters.

Round Table owners, Jan and Steve Brown, said the group consistently violated restaurant policies against posting signs, passing out fliers and approaching customers.

Miner Moe’s has welcomed the group.

“We welcome everybody, 365 days a year,” manager Maureen Hughes said. “There is no political (favoritism) here; we just make pizza.”

Dean supporter Margie Determan said the group didn’t violate any Round Table policies that were spelled out to the organizers.

“If Round Table has a policy (we violated), it would have come up a long time ago, but it didn’t,” Determan said.

The next Dean Meetup is 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Miner Moe’s Pizza in Grass Valley.
