Mine set to open close to Yuba

Yuba County is poised to give approval to reopening the Blue Point Mine, a 65-acre surface mine near Smartville.

A Smartville company called Blue Point Rock Products proposes to remove sand and gravel from the mine, part of 520 acres the company owns between Highway 20 and the Yuba River.

According to its permit application, the gravel plant would operate six days a week year-round. It would produce a maximum of 2,000 tons per day – about 60 truckloads – during the summer, and only a quarter of that, 500 tons per day, during the winter.

The Yuba County Planning Commission is expected to approve the mining permit at its meeting Feb. 19.

The only thing left to be ironed out is Yuba County’s request that Blue Point Rock pay some money up front to repair Smartville Road.

“The road’s in such bad shape,” said Clifton Taylor, assistant planner for Yuba County. Blue Point Rock will pay 8 cents per ton of material it hauls, but Yuba County wants it to do the road repairs up front, Taylor said. Then the county will credit it for the money it spends.

Hydraulic mining took place on the site in the 1800s, says the permit application prepared by the gravel company.

Charles Vertrees, co-owner of Blue Point Rock, didn’t return calls made Wednesday and Thursday to his home.
