The 2002 recipients of the Barbara Schmidt Millar Memorial Scholarships are Rachel Seeders, who will attend Santa Barbara City College to study nursing; Jessica Ross, who will attend the University of California at Davis to study medicine; and Kelsey Kinnard, who will attend California State University, Chico, to study nursing. They will each receive $2,000.

Barbara Schmidt Millar was a Nevada County resident who died of cancer in 1995 at age 42. She was a valedictorian of the Nevada Union High School class of 1971. She became a nurse and returned to Nevada County to live, raise her family and work.

The Celebration of Life Women’s Triathlon is an annual tribute to her memory. The event raises money to benefit the Barbara Schmidt Millar Memorial Fund of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The fund provides free mammograms for women who would normally avoid the procedure due to cost. In addition, Millar’s family awards annual nursing and/or medical educational scholarships from triathlon proceeds to graduating young women from NU.
