Medlyn guilty of murdering Spratt, jury finds

A Nevada County jury convicted Penn Valley resident Steven Medlyn today of first-degree murder in the death of Mary Spratt.

They also found him guilty of first-degree burglary after about eight hours of deliberation since Tuesday afternoon.

It was an emotional scene at the Nevada County Courthouse as relatives of Spratt received the news. Spratt, 75, was found strangled in her Grass Valley apartment in May 2007.

Assistant District Attorney Anna Ferguson had argued Medlyn had hidden in the bathroom of her unlocked apartment, wrapped Spratt’s dog leash around her neck, then stole her purse containing her prescription painkillers and bingo winnings from earlier in the evening.

She also described an uneasy relationship between victim and assailant in which they shared oxycontin, but Spratt later accused Medlyn of stealing money from her.

Keri Goodrow, of the county Public Defender’s office, had argued Medlyn was asleep at the time of the killing at the Penn Valley home of his mother, where Medlyn, his wife and children were living.

Investigators testified they found Spratt’s purse under Medlyn’s bed.
