May the best local wine win

Are you a home winemaker? Do you wonder if your wines are good, maybe really good, or perhaps need help? Here is your chance to find out.

Saturday, July 21 is the deadline to enter your wines in this year’s Home Winemaking Competition at the Nevada County Fair. The judging takes place during the Fair on Thursday Aug. 9th at noon. Last year there were more than 50 entries in red, white and fruit wine categories. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel were the biggest categories but Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and various fruit wines were all represented.

The judges are all wine industry professionals. Every year I try to pull together the strongest panel of judges I can find so the entrants know their wines will be judged fairly. In addition to the individual medals there are awards for Best White, Best Red, Best Fruit Wine, Best of Show and Best Wine produced from Nevada County grapes.

In an unusual twist, every year the Best of Show winner is invited to be an honorary guest judge the following year. Last year’s winner was Dan Carrick of Penn Valley. He won Best of Show with his 2005 Viognier, grown in Penn Valley.

To enter your wines contact the Nevada County Fair at 273-6217. Fill out your application before July 21. There is no charge to enter. It requires one bottle of wine for judging and a second dummy bottle for display. There is also a label contest that is a separate entry. And for entrants only, contact for one more important detail.
