Man found on road identified

A man found dead Monday afternoon near Brunswick Road, following a three-car collision, was identified as 75-year-old Neil Vreeland of Grass Valley, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Vreeland died of natural causes, said an official with the sheriff’s office. His body was found on the side of the roadway on the 13000 block of Brunswick Road at approximately 3:30 p.m Monday.

Vreeland worked as a wine expert at the Indian Springs Vineyards Tasting Room in Nevada City.

“He loved his job,” said Julie Holmes, the winery’s tasting room manager.

According to Peardale-Chicago Park Fire Department Chief Jim Bierwagen, Vreeland apparently got out of his car near the scene of an accident caused by hazardous road conditions due to Monday afternoon’s winter storm.

Bierwagen said Monday that Vreeland apparently suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the side of the road, where his body was found.
