Man found dead in car is identified

A man found dead in his car on Gaston Road was identified by friends and acquaintances on Monday as Washington area resident Tom Evans.

Lt. Jeff Powell of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said it was an “apparent natural death,” although an autopsy has not been completed.

Powell could not say whether or not Evans, believed to be in his 60s, suffered a heart attack while trying to push his car out of the snow and then got back into the car, where his body was found. Powell could also not say whether or not Evans’ condition as a diabetic contributed to his death.

More than 2 feet of snow accumulated on Gaston Road – around three miles north of the town of Washington – during the weekend, according to local residents. Powell said sheriff’s deputies got stuck while driving to the scene but were eventually able to move Evans’ vehicle to their yard.

Evans’ body is currently at the Chapel of the Angels Mortuary. Information on funeral arrangements was not available Monday.
