Man fatally crushed

A construction worker was killed Thursday afternoon in what was believed to be a freak accident outside of Penn Valley.

The dump truck driver’s head reportedly was crushed when his truck’s raised bed collapsed on him.

The victim’s name was not released by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Thursday evening because his family had not yet been notified of the accident. He was described as being middle-aged.

The accident occurred sometime between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at a residential construction site at 20253 Wildwood West. The street is off Pleasant Valley Road, across from Lake Wildwood.

“He was delivering rock,” said Ryan Hughes, a construction worker who was one of several laying concrete for the foundation of the house.

Hughes and his coworkers at Bobby Jones and Son Concrete said that after the truck driver unloaded his gravel on a low-grade slope, he tried to drive the truck back up the hill but became stuck.

He got out of the truck and stuck his head under the bed, presumably to look at the tires, Hughes said.

“It’s an old truck,” Hughes said. “I don’t think the hydraulics were working right.”

For some reason, the bed of the truck collapsed on top of the driver, who was not an employee of Bobby Jones and Son. Construction workers at the scene said they did not know the victim.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Powell said.

Hughes said that the victim was in his late 50s or 60s.
