Man dies when pickup overturns

A Grass Valley man was killed Sunday afternoon when the car he was driving overturned south of the city near the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Dennis Phillipson, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene, on Old Auburn Road, about 1Ú2-mile south of McCourtney Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Phillipson was driving a pickup truck north on Old Auburn Road at an unknown speed at about 3 p.m. The pickup missed a sweeping left-hand turn in the road, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jerry Morgan said. Phillipson overcorrected, Morgan said, and spun 180 degrees into a ditch, where the truck overturned.

Phillipson was ejected from the vehicle, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, and died from head and face injuries.

Nevada County Consolidated, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Higgins Area, and Grass Valley fire departments responded to the crash.
