Man arrested for tool theft

After searching a home on the 300 block of North Church Street, Grass Valley police detectives on Wednesday arrested one of two suspects in last week’s burglary of a home being renovated by Habitat for Humanity.

Richard Lund, 24, was arrested without incident on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and violating probation. Officers found additional stolen property at the home, police Capt. Greg Hart said.

The tools, which were worth about $5,000, were stolen Jan. 12 or 13 from a North Church Street house that Habitat for Humanity volunteers are restoring.

Volunteers had to cancel a workday at the house because of the missing tools, builder Frank Sobrero said last week.

After reading a story about the theft in The Union, a resident who was not involved with the theft returned some of the tools, according to Grass Valley police.

Lund was also arrested last February on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly injuring his 4-month-old son severely. Authorities said at the time he was responsible for causing the infant, Xavier Lund, to have brain damage, after his former girlfriend left the two at their home.

The charges were later dropped because of a lack of evidence against him, prosecutors said.

Hart said police expect to arrest the second suspect in the Habitat for Humanity burglary soon.
