Man arrested for allegedly making dry ice ‘bombs’

A Lake of the Pines man remained in jail Monday after setting off a dry ice “bomb” in the lake.

Paul William Chase III was detained by a security officer at a park in the gated subdivision after allegedly putting dry ice in a plastic bottle and throwing it into the water.

Chase was found sitting in the park near a bag of dry ice, two two-liter plastic bottles, a hammer and a pair of thick gloves, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.

He said he was “just making noise,” Royal said.

Chase initially gave Sheriff’s deputies the wrong date of birth and was found to have an outstanding warrant from Placer County.

“He admitted to having a knife in his pocket and deputies also found marijuana, a pipe and a number of hydrocodone pills that he did not have a prescription for,” Royal said.

Hydrocodone is the generic name of the painkiller Vicodin.

Chase was arrested on suspicion of possessing a destructive device in a public place, making a destructive device without a permit, falsely representing himself to a peace officer and possessing a controlled substance. Bail was set at $250,000.

The explosive device Chase allegedly made with dry ice could seriously injure or even kill someone, Royal said.
