Man accused of stabbing to enter plea on Monday

A 26-year-old Grass Valley man accused of stabbing another man was arraigned on attempted murder and assault charges Friday in Nevada County Superior Court.

Frank E. Vargas is scheduled to enter a plea Monday. He’s being held at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $250,000 bail.

He is accused of stabbing another man at a Rough and Ready-area house on Sept. 7, possibly in retaliation for an incident involving a Vargas family member, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses reported Vargas threatened to stab the man in the throat while holding him in a headlock. The man allegedly was stabbed in the arm during the scuffle and Vargas fled, only to be arrested nine days later at a Yuba County traffic stop.

Vargas’ attempted murder charge was included in a revised criminal complaint with charges stemming from a pair of June 3 incidents. He is charged in that case with assault with a deadly weapon, use of tear gas, possession of tear gas and special allegations claiming he violated a black man’s civil rights.

In that case, Vargas, who has white supremacy tattoos, was accused of threatening to harm a black man while walking past his Grass Valley house and, moments later, pepper-spraying a motorist who had stopped to ask Vargas if he needed help.

Witnesses told Grass Valley police Vargas also tried to stab the man who was sprayed.
