Man accidentally killed during deadly game

A Grass Valley man is dead after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun during what appeared to be a game similar to Russian Roulette.

Grass Valley Police Captain Dave Remillard said the man died at the scene of the shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday at an apartment on the 300 block of Bennett Street in Grass Valley.

“The shooting is classified as accidental,” Remillard said. “Two men were playing a game with a handgun.”

The man had been drinking heavily and smoking pot with a friend when he pulled the trigger of a large caliber handgun.

Remillard would not release the man’s identity pending notification of next of kin, or specify what game the men were playing.

Investigators will determine how many rounds were in the gun during the shooting, Remillard said.

Paramedics arrived at the apartment at 11 p.m., and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Results of an autopsy will be released later today.

Remillard said the shooting is under investigation, and charges may be filed against the dead man’s friend.
