Making up for lost dollars

When Fire Chief Jim Marquis decided to halt Fourth of July fireworks sales for fear of starting another blaze in this fire-prone year, he knew there were civic and non-profit groups that would suffer.

Eight groups bought permits from the City of Grass Valley to sell fireworks to raise funds, but Marquis pulled them June 26 when wildfires were burning all around Nevada County and a public clamor went up to halt their sale and use. Nevada City never did issue fireworks sales permits this year.

Many of the groups said they understood, and the city agreed to give them their money back. But they were still left with a big void for their annual fundraising activity. Now area residents are rallying to their side in a variety of ways.

“They’re welcome to come to the fairgrounds and seek donations” today when the annual July 4th celebration begins at 3 p.m., said to Cathy Whittlesey at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.

“Also, the Calvary Bible Church youth group will be selling water at the parade,” which begins at 11 a.m. on Broad Street in Nevada City, Whittlesey said. “The NU choir will be selling root beer floats in front of Save Mart on Saturday.”

The Save Mart store in Grass Valley said it will provide as much ice cream, root beer, cups, straws and spoons as needed to meet demand.

In addition, “I have the NU Band all set up for the fairgrounds” for Independence Day, said Julie Jordan at the Grass Valley Downtown Association. “They’ll have a donation jar and they will have a quilt raffle.”

Following are the names of the groups that lost out to the fireworks ban and where donations can be sent, according to Kimette Neufeld of the NU Choir Boosters and the City of Grass Valley:
