Made in the shade – by 49er Rotary

City officials, residents and members of local Rotary Clubs gathered at Dee Mautino Park in Grass Valley this week to dedicate the new shade sails that cover playground areas at Mautino and Memorial parks.

Mayor Lisa Swarthout thanked the 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada City for organizing and installing the heavy-duty canvas sails that protect youngsters from heat and sun.

“Money is tight these days, and we couldn’t have done this without the support of Rotary and the community,” the mayor said.

The project was funded through a $40,000 recreation grant from Nevada County, a $3,000 contribution and volunteer labor from 49er Rotary and another $20,000 in donated services and equipment from several local business owners.

Under the leadership of designer Brian Bisnett and coordinator Daniel Swartzendruber, 49er Rotarians installed the shades Oct. 5 at Mautino Park and Oct. 7 at Memorial Park.
