Local schools win state-level accolades

Lyman Gilmore and Scotten School in the Grass Valley School District both have received prestigious awards.

Both schools have been honored with the Title I Academic Acheiving School Award, which is bestowed for meeting certain criteria to improve test scores for all students.

“This award is given when students from all (socio-economic) subgroups improve their performance,” district superintendent Jon Byerrum said.

For Lyman Gilmore, it is the first time winning the award. The school also is in the final stages of competing for the California Distinguished School title, which it won in 2001.

Scotten School also has won the Title I Academic Achieving School Award five consecutive years dating back to 2003. Scotten is one of only 13 schools in the state of California to win the award five years in a row, according to Byerrum.

The teachers and staff hold the key to the academic success of the schools, Byerrum said.

“If you are going to increase your test scores and have an outstanding program, it always boils down to the quality of teaching in the classroom,” Byerrum said. “We use a lot of data we collect from student performances and use it to further improve student performance.”

Other schools in Grass Valley school district that have received the California Distinguished School title include Margaret G. Scotten School and Hennessy School. Scotten won the title in 2002 and Hennessy received it in 1998, Byerrum said.
