Local Habitat chapter honors heroes

Nevada County Habitat for Humanity honored many of its volunteers and celebrated with a meal prepared by Millie Beatie and her crew.

The festivities held Wednesday at Emanuel Episcopal Church included a farewell to departing board members Rod Fivelstad and Kebby and Mary Margaretich, and a welcome to new board members Doug McDonald and Pat Swope.

Also honored during the event were many Habitat heroes who have given with passion and a loving heart to our community.

The Joan Lancaster Memorial Award was given to Marilyn Hopkins for extraordinary gifts of time, talent, leadership and dedication to Habitat and the larger community.

The Rock awards were given to Pam Andersen, Rod Fivelstad, and Don Unger. Habitat “rocks” represent the solid foundation of the organization.

The 2009 Habitat volunteers of the year were Donna Davenport, Al Gariano, Doug Wilson and John Woodhall.

Habitat’s volunteers have built 19 affordable homes serving 26 adults and 60 children in Nevada County.

Affordable home ownership continues to grow as a critical community need. Right now, these Habitat Heroes are the only true champions for families with low to moderate incomes who strive to better their situation and become an integral part of our unique community.
