Let’s bring back chain gangs

I keep reading about our overcrowded prisons as well as repeat offenders. The prisoners have a bunk, good meals, TV, radios etc. and they have little or no respect for the courts or laws.

In my younger years I lived down south and they had chain gangs where the prisoners were put to work on roads as well as other jobs in the open air. Yes, they had leg irons for the “runners” and they were supervised by guards with rifles who would shoot if necessary.

When a prisoner’s time was up and they were released, they knew that if they committed another crime, it was back to the chain gang, which I am sure discouraged many of them from being repeat offenders.

We spend billions on building and staffing prisons when these offenders should be put to productive work with much less burden on the taxpayers. I am sure California would greatly reduce repeat offenders if chain gangs were set up here and it would greatly reduce our prison population.
