Legal Assistance’s caseload tops out

Nevada County Legal Assistance is no longer accepting new clients because of a lack of funding.

“We’re not taking any new clients, given our financial situation, until further notice,” NCLA President Jennifer Walters said Monday.

Founded in 1974, the nonprofit organization provides legal aid for low-income people.

Clients get advice on family law matters and assistance with filling out divorce papers and obtaining restraining orders.

NCLA lost 15 percent of its budget during the summer, when United Way cut its contribution by $2,000, a $3,000 private donation wasn’t renewed, and the county cut its allocation by $10,000.

Since going public with its financial crisis last month, the nonprofit has received a lot of phone calls from concerned citizens and a few

NCLA will continue to serve its current client list, she said.

“Until we can reassess our financial situation, we would ask the community to direct questions and needs to the Nevada County Superior Courts or the Public Law Center,” Walters said.

The Public Law Center is a free legal clinic in the Law Library on the first floor of the Nevada County Courthouse in Nevada City. Individuals can contact the clinic by calling 265-2918.

Walters said NCLA intends to make a pitch to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors to see if there are any county funds available to help the nonprofit make ends meet.
